Chapter Eleven: Older Friends

Sven looked down at Krivor’s body lying at his feet. Her legs were curled around her tightly, and her eyes glittered blankly up at him. She didn’t look menacing at all anymore.

He retrieved his sword, numbly wiping it clean, and sheathed it.

“I won,” he said. “I’m avenged.”

But he didn’t feel particularly triumphant. The last of the villagers trickling by them were eyeing him warily, as if they were a little afraid of him. After all, he’d just killed an S-Ranker right in front of them.

“Do you think they’ll be all right with Krivor gone?” he asked.

Ash nodded and handed him back his second sword. “They’ll be fine. There are a lot of them. If they band together they should be able to protect themselves.”

“There are more Undead than there are villagers.”

“Yeah, but the villagers are smarter. They want to survive. And they only have to make it far enough east to get past the plague. I think they’ll make it.”

Sven watched the last of the refugees leave. They looked scrawny and weak in the gathering gloom.

“Okay,” he said. “You’re probably right. Let’s move on before it gets dark.”

“What about Krivor?” Ash asked.

He looked down at the dead spider. She’d shrunk even more in death, thin legs wrapping around her like a shroud.

“We’ll have to leave her,” he said finally. “We don’t have time to bury her now. The Undead will be out in force once it gets dark.”

Ash pulled out her canteen and spilled a little water on the ground. “To Krivor,” she said. “She wasn’t very nice, but she fought hard.”

“She did some good in the world,” Sven admitted. “She defended the weak, as long as it suited her purposes. She was out here in the cold to protect these people. Lost a leg for them. She could have just left them here and moved on.”

He felt another flash of guilt at that. Krivor had been trying to help, and he’d killed her. If anyone died because he’d left them undefended, it was partly his fault. But it was too late to change anything now. And he was bound west. He couldn’t turn back from his mission now. All he could do was hope that everyone made it to safety.

He looked at Krivor for a moment, one last time. Then, he wrapped his cloak around his shoulders and turned away.

“Moving on,” he said. “Let’s try to find some shelter soon.”

Once again, the road was almost deserted. They occasionally counted a straggling villager or two, and each time, they stopped to urge them on and let them know how far they were from the rest of the group. Eventually, they stopped seeing even those. They were alone with the Undead once more.

As the sun was just about to slip beneath the horizon, they rounded a corner and came face to face with a familiar view: the old site of the Adventurer’s Rest. Ash’s walking spell had removed the tavern cleanly from its foundations, and all that remained of the building was an empty hole in the ground.
